Support an army of Petite women who feel confident in their clothes, empowered, and inspire the next generation to be amazing.

Mission #02

Sprinkle compliments like confetti. If you think it, and it's nice, say it to her. She doesn't hear as many compliments as you think.

Mission #03

Make it fun. It's fashion for goodness sake!

Knowing what to wear when losing weight is tough when every outfit in your closet suddenly feels too big. You shouldn’t have to choose between panic-shopping and wearing baggy clothes for six months. In this episode, Angela walks through the exact process she uses with private coaching clients to build a small, flattering “in-between” wardrobe.

Did you know that over 10 million people in the US are on Ozempic or another GLP-1? It’s changing everything, from shrinking portion sizes at restaurants to a drop in sales of junk food, sugary drinks, and alcohol. And of course, it’s changed how we shop. Women who are unsure about their new size are buying multiples of the same piece and returning the ones that don’t fit. Which we all know is a huge hassle.

For Petites, significant weight loss is even more challenging than it is for our taller sisters. First, because we have less vertical real estate. So, the difference between one size and the next can be as little as eight to ten pounds. Layer on the uncertainty of which sizes go with our new body shape, and it’s overwhelming when none of your clothes fit anymore.

A couple of things tend to happen next: we either panic-shop for something to wear to that important Wednesday meeting, which rarely ends with clothes we actually like. Or we end up wearing clothes that are way too big for way too long. Clothes that don’t fit undermine our professional image, plus constantly fiddling with necklines that slip, skirts that want to slide off our hips when we stand, and pants that look saggy in the seat become daily irritants and a huge distraction.

What We’re Covering This Week

In this episode, we’re talking all about what to wear when losing weight: what to alter, what to do with clothes that are way too big even when you’re scared to get rid of them, and how to build a small capsule wardrobe to get you through until the next ten pounds. Stick around until the end, when we talk about specific styles to look for and exactly where to find them, so getting dressed during that middle stage of weight loss is stress-free — and maybe even fun. I’m Angela, your Petite style coach, and when you’re ready, let’s dive in.

“I’ll Just Wait Until I Hit My Goal Weight”

There are a lot of strong feelings around weight loss. The first one I hear is, “I still have more weight to lose. I’ll just wait until I reach my goal before dealing with my closet. After all, I don’t want to buy a bunch of things that won’t fit in a month or two.”

Your hesitance to waste time, effort, and money makes sense.

But the answer doesn’t need to be so black and white. There’s a happy middle between buying nothing and replacing everything. Like buying a few smart, versatile pieces that’ll serve you well over the next six to eight weeks. Very few clients can put their life completely on hold while losing weight and just show up every day in stretchy yoga pants. And besides, isn’t some small part of you excited about shopping for a smaller size or trying a style you’ve always wanted to but stayed away from?

The second doubt that usually creeps in is, “I don’t want to get rid of everything that’s too big. What if I gain the weight back?” Again, the solution doesn’t need to be black and white. Who says you need to get rid of it? Which leads us right into step one.

Step #01: See What Actually Fits in Your Closet

Before we do anything else (including shopping) we need to move the clothes that are uncomfortably big right now out of our closet. Not get rid of them, but do they need to be in your primary closet? Could they instead be boxed up, labeled, and stored in the garage, attic, or a guest bedroom closet? Once the clothes that don’t fit are gone, seeing your options and getting dressed in the morning becomes a whole lot easier. Skip this step, and we too often buy clothes that don’t fill any real wardrobe gap.

The fun part of this process is that as you go through the items that still fit, you’ll likely rediscover clothes you haven’t worn because up until now they’ve been too tight.

When To Tailor Versus Buy New

You’ll also run into clothes that are “on the fence”. Slightly too big in one area but still okay in others. For Petites, alterations of two inches or less are usually doable. Nipping in the waistband is typically an easy fix. So is raising the hem. Not because we shrunk, but because when we lose width in our middle, skirts and pants hang lower, which makes the hem sit lower too.

Lined blazers are difficult to alter and often end up costing more than just buying new. Dresses can go either way depending on where they’re too roomy. For the bust, tweaking the darts can be an easy fix, but necklines and zippers get harder and pricier to alter. If you’re trying a new tailor for the first time, take in one piece first and see how it turns out. If they end up ruining one piece, it’s a lot less upsetting than if they destroy your entire wardrobe.

Step 2: Figure Out What to Wear When Losing Weight Day-to-Day

Now that you know what you have. We move to step number two. What do you need? There are really two paths forward. The first is buying five to seven dresses. Say, five for work and a couple for the weekend and wearing them on repeat. That’s absolutely an option. Especially if your legs are your favorite feature and you want to accentuate them even more right now.

If you’re more of a separates person, or you’re listening to this in winter and want more mixing and matching, here’s where we start building your weight loss capsule wardrobe. Capsule wardrobe experts love to talk about how many pieces you need. A traditional capsule revolves around 30 pieces. A minimalist capsules around 10. But pieces don’t translate into outfits, which is what we actually need.

How Many Pieces To Start With

So instead, ask: how many outfits do you want, and will that get you happily through until it’s time for the next size down? Only you can decide that, but for this example, let’s say your goal is five career outfits.

Say you prefer skirts but wear pants on casual Fridays — that means four skirts and one pair of pants, plus a couple of blazers and five blouses, sweaters, or tops to rotate through the week. The easiest solution is classic styles in a limited color palette. For the most part, your accessories will continue to fit, though depending on how much weight you lose, your shoes may eventually be too big. But you can always switch things up with different earrings, shoes, or a different handbag.

Choose Your Color Palette

It’s easiest to choose three neutral colors — black, gray, and white; chocolate brown, cream, and burgundy; or navy, white, and beige. If you kept a few great pieces you want to keep wearing, that will push you toward a specific palette. A terrific pair of gray pants points you toward black, white, and gray. A chocolate blazer that still fits points you toward brown, cream, and burgundy. There’s no right or wrong — it’s about what looks best and feels right on you.

Just like every Petite is different, we all lose weight differently — which makes this the perfect time to check in on your body shape.

What is my body shape quiz

Style Tip: Have your proportions shifted? Take our quick Petite Body Shape Quiz
to find your current Signature Body Shape and discover the exact silhouettes that flatter your changing figure.

One caveat: when your body has been roughly the same for years, you can usually eyeball your shape without measuring. But mid-weight-loss, it’s best to grab a measuring tape and verify your shoulder-and-bust measurement against your hip-and-thigh measurement — because you’ve been there for every minute of the change, your perspective on where you’ve lost the most volume can be skewed, and it’s worth double-checking.

Step #03: Get Specific When Shopping for Weight Loss Styles

Have you ever Googled “how do I make…” and a thousand different autofill prompts come up? That has more in common than you’d think with typing “petite navy skirt” into a search bar — too many options, none quite right, and a huge time suck. Instead, get specific: “petite navy pinstripe pencil skirt” will still give you plenty of choices, but nowhere near the flood you’d get from a vague search.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe on Your Budget

Once you know your budget, it’s easy to divide it across your list. Say you can spend $2,000 and need 12 pieces — that’s roughly $167 per item. Or your budget is $1,000 for 12 pieces, which is about $84 a piece. If you go a little over on the blazer, look for blouses on sale or from a less expensive retailer to balance it out.

What To Shop For First

Before you shop, schedule a bra fitting — it’s a step too many women skip, but the right bra makes everything you buy fit and look better.

How do you decide which piece to shop for first? It’s usually clear, because one closet gap tends to be more severe than another. Keep in mind which of your pieces will create the most complete outfits — a single pair of navy pants that pairs with four blouses is a bigger priority than a white dress that pairs with almost nothing.

Best Styles and Stretch Fabrics To Look For

We’re looking for styles that flatter your body shape, fabrics with a bit of stretch that’ll last through more than one size, and cuts that are flexible.

  • Dresses: A shirt dress lets you tie the belt as tight as you want, though it can skew casual for the office — look for one without a shirttail hem for a more polished line, and check Boden for great Petite styles in jersey or stretch jersey. A wrap dress is another timeless option since you control how tight the belt ties; Hobbs London and Me+Em both offer fuller and more tailored skirt options.
  • Skirts: Stay classic, but avoid picking multiple skirts in similar silhouettes — two pencil skirts or two A-line skirts will bore you fast. Choose styles you can actually tell apart.
  • Pants: If pants are your priority, start with Favorite Daughter for great variety in leg shape, rise, and color, and Mint Velvet for classic options. Eileen Fisher has great classic, timeless tailored styles in stretch crepe, which holds its shape while giving you flexibility.
  • Tops & Blazers: Knits are always a smart choice for the stretch. Try The Fold London for tops, blouses, and sweaters. For blazers, check AritziaVeronica Beard, and Aqua (Bloomingdale’s house brand) — always confirm sizing specs even on labels that call themselves Petite-friendly.

This Week’s Petite Style Challenge

Listening to the tips is great, but putting them into practice is where getting dressed actually gets easier. This week’s challenge: move the clothes that are way too big out of your primary closet. No pressure — you don’t have to donate or toss them, just box them up, label them, and store them somewhere out of the way. When your closet is packed with clothes that don’t fit, you waste time and energy sorting through every option each morning. Being able to see what actually fits makes every other tip in this episode so much easier to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a streamlined collection of versatile, interchangeable clothing pieces. A traditional capsule wardrobe consists of 30 pieces, and a minimalist capsule is limited to 10. The items are usually in a limited neutral color palette to maximize mixing and matching.

What should I wear when losing weight if my size keeps changing?

Focus on building a small transition capsule of five to seven versatile outfits in flexible stretch fabrics like jersey and stretch crepe. These materials flex across multiple sizes so you don’t have to buy a new wardrobe every month.

Should I wait until I reach my goal weight before updating my wardrobe?

You can, but waiting means months of wearing ill-fitting clothes that hurt your confidence and professional image. Instead, build a small transition capsule to carry you comfortably through the next six to eight weeks.

Do I need to get rid of my too-big clothes right away?

No, simply box up anything that’s uncomfortably large and store it outside your main closet. Keep the boxes in a garage, attic, or guest room so you can clearly see what fits now without prematurely giving away clothes.

How many pieces do I need for a weight loss capsule wardrobe?

Think in terms of complete outfits rather than a strict number of individual clothing pieces. Aim for five versatile career outfits built around a limited three-color neutral palette to get you through the work week.

Should I retake the Petite Body Shape Quiz while losing weight?

Yes, because weight loss alters your proportions and can shift your signature body shape. Retaking the quiz ensures you purchase new silhouettes that flatter where your figure is right now.
