This fall, the trends are full of pitfalls for Petites.

  • Handbags as big as a suitcase
  • Oversized bulky boyfriend sweaters
  • Humongous plaid patterns
  • Patchwork worthy of a church quilting bee

And let’s not forget midi-length skirts and dresses.

Here’s the thing: Petites can wear anything they want. It’s just that some styles are harder to pull off and require us to tweak things a bit in order to compensate.

However, midi-length skirts are one of those styles clients consistently want to wear — whether it’s because they’re going to synagogue, because it feels office appropriate, because they don’t love their knees, or likely a bajillion other reasons.

So in this episode, we’re talking about how to pull off this season’s super popular midi-length skirt trend successfully. Plus some clever petite styling tips for midi skirts you can use to create a flattering outfit.

I’m Angela, your Petite style coach. And when you’re ready, let’s jump in.

Why Midi Skirts for Petites Are Tricky

When it comes to Petite style, a safe rule of thumb is to go long or go short. Anything that falls into that muddy middle is tough. The reason why is because we have less vertical real estate than our taller sisters. And every time we break that vertical line, we look shorter and shorter — and you know what comes next: the shorter we look, the wider we look.

Now, while most Petites don’t hate being short. And our goal isn’t to look taller. The majority of us would agree that we don’t love looking wider, no matter how thin or not we are.

Let’s talk through a few examples of style choices that break up our vertical line. Because even though this is audio, we can still paint a picture:

  • Black shoes with a black ankle strap on lighter skin tones. It creates the illusion that our legs end at the ankle strap instead of our toes, when we could be using every single inch.
  • A white blazer that hits at the hip bones (or below), paired with black pants. Our vertical line gets cut off at the hem of the blazer with that dramatic color blocking.
  • A knee-length navy skirt worn with cream tights. This would literally chop us off at the knees, which looks almost as awful as it sounds.

How to Avoid this Petite Style Mistake

Let’s first agree on what midi length actually means: this is when the hem hits below the knee and above the ankle.

On a side note, for women who are Petite on the bottom, you’ll definitely want to make sure you’re shopping Petite brands and designers — otherwise you risk the midi skirt being too long and hanging wonky. In case you’re not sure whether you’re Petite on the top, the bottom, or both, we talk all about how to know for sure in Episode #8, linked in the resources below.

Because midi-length skirts and dresses have the potential to cut off our vertical line right in the middle of our calves, Petites need to be savvy about body shape and volume, and then use those tools along with some clever styling techniques to compensate.

We’re going to break these tips down by body shape. Which makes now a great time (if you haven’t already) to take the Petite Body Shape Quiz. It’s super fast. Only two minutes and seven questions. Afterward, this episode (and every other one) will make a lot more sense.

In case you’re thinking to skip. You might want to reconsider. Because we look at body shape differently around here. No apples, pears, or anything else that belongs in a fruit salad. There’s also no circles, squares, or triangles because your body isn’t a geometry problem to solve.

Adding Volume the Right Way: Signature Body Shape #04 (and #03)

Let’s start with Signature Body Shape #04. Quick reminder: you’ll want to add volume from the waist down, while keeping volume to a minimum from the waist up. These suggestions also work for Signature Body Shape #03 when you want to add a bit of drama to your outfit.

If you want to use material to add a hint of volume, you’re going to love your options this season. Corduroy, leather, suede, and velvet are everywhere. When you’d rather use style to add volume, look for A-line midi skirts or ones with a fuller cut. Pleats or even a cargo style work too.

A few specific outfit formulas to try:

  • A faux leather midi skirt with a V-neck blouse or wrap sweater — terrific if you want to accentuate your bust and neckline.
  • A higher-rise skirt that lands right at your visible waistline, with a belt whenever possible. Brilliant for accentuating your waist.
  • If you love your bum, make sure the hem of your top ends at the top of your hip bones, or higher if possible.

When you’re ready to ramp up your midi skirt game, check out Anthropologie. They carry midi skirts in fabrics and styles built to add a hint of volume: think fuller silhouettes, tulle ruffles, and tiered layers.

Adding Volume the Right Way: Signature Body Shape #06 (and #03)

Now for Signature Body Shape #06. Quick reminder: you’ll want to add volume from the waist up, while keeping volume to a minimum from the waist down. Signature Body Shape #03, you can borrow these suggestions too when you want a little drama up top.

Slip skirts continue their popularity this season, so they’ll be easy to find. From a career-wear standpoint, slim pencil skirts are making a huge comeback. Apparently, office attire is hot again. Slip skirts come in everything from 100% silk to 100% viscose, so if dry cleaning factors into your decision, check the care label before buying.

If you’re concerned about slip skirts showing small lumps and bumps, you’ve got a few options. Avoid overly shiny fabrics (often found in semi-synthetic materials like viscose and acetate). Or choose a small floral or animal print (brilliant for camouflaging). And of course, there’s always shapewear.

When you’re ready to shop, check out Marks & Spencer. They’re not messing around this season when it comes to styles, colors, and prints. If you have long enough legs to wear regular-sized bottoms, take a look at Aritzia. Their slip skirts have been on point all year.

A few specific outfit formulas to try:

  • A slim pencil skirt with a cropped boxy blazer. Depending on where the blazer hem hits, this works beautifully whether your favorite feature is your bum or your waist.
  • To accentuate your waist, swap the boxy blazer for a peplum blazer, or simply add a belt.
  • To accentuate your bust, collarbones, or neckline, pair a traditional button-down with a leopard slip skirt. The unexpected combination really elevates the look.

Using Color to Make Us Look Longer For A More Flattering Outfit

Monochromatic looks always help Petites look longer — and monochromatic doesn’t have to mean all black. Depending on what flatters your skin tone, consider gray or chocolate brown, which is especially popular this season.

You can also play with a tonal look — shades of the same color from head to toe. For example, a deep brown skirt paired with a rich cinnamon top, or a burgundy blouse with a chili-colored skirt. The colors should be close enough to work well together, while different enough that it doesn’t look like you were going for monochromatic and just missed the target.

Choosing the Right Shoes (and Why Boots Are Tricky) for Midi Skirts

Pointed toe shoes are always flattering on Petites — they create that arrow-like effect that makes legs look longer, especially paired with a midi-length skirt. Choose a pair that matches your skin tone or tight color and you’ll get double the elongating effect.

It’s fall, which means boot season, so let’s address it directly: ideally, the hem of your midi skirt should fall below the top of your boots. Midi skirts and booties are not a good outfit pairing, and here’s why — the hem of the midi skirt cuts off your vertical line once, your skin tone or tight color creates a second break, and then the boot top creates a third break, all within the space of your calf. Three breaks in that small a space is best avoided.

Your Midi Skirts For Petites Style Challenge

Do you have a few midi skirts already in your closet — maybe ones you liked enough to buy but don’t wear very often? Or have you struggled to make one work as part of a flattering outfit? Before deciding whether to donate it, try the tips from this episode: pair it with a top that adds or avoids volume depending on your Signature Body Shape, try a monochromatic or tonal look, add tights in a similar shade, or swap your footwear to create the illusion that your legs go on forever.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection — as long as you feel confident in the outfit, that’s a win. And moving forward, you’ll be able to shop with focus and purchase with intention.

Afterward, pop over to insidepetitestyle.com, tap the voicemail button, and share which styling tips you tried or want to try first. Hearing your aha moments is the best part.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wearing Midi Skirts as a Petite

Where should a midi skirt hit on a petite frame?

The most flattering length for midi skirts on Petites is when the hem lands below the widest part of your calf. This avoids accidentally making our calves look heavier than what they really are.

Can petite women wear midi skirts without looking shorter?

Heck, yeah! When that’s a concern, there are two style tips to keep in mind. The first is Petite proportion and making sure that the waistband of the skirt is visible by either tucking your top or making sure that the hem of the top hits you no lower than your hipbones. The second way is to pair your midi skirt with a monochromatic or tonal top or blouse. Wearing one color from head to toe always makes us look longer and leaner.

What boots should you wear with a midi skirt when you’re short?

To avoid cutting off our vertical line prematurely, choose boots where the top of shalf in underneath the skirt’s hem. And keep in mind, the best boots to pair with a midi skirt are fitted, pointed-toe boots that tuck up underneath the hem of the skirt. Where Petites run into problems are with chunky ankle boots in a contrasting color from your skintone or tight or skirt color.

What is the most flattering midi skirt style for petite body shapes?

The best style depends on your body shape. A-line, pleated, or fuller styles look terrific on women with a hip and thigh measurement smaller than their shoulder/but measurement. Slip skirts and more tailored pencil skirts are brilliant on women with a bust and shoulder measurement smaller than their hip and thigh measurement.

Pro Tip: If you’ve taken the Petite Body Shape quiz, Signature Shape #04 and #03 look amazing in flared A-lines styles or in fabrics with a small print, while Signature Shape #06 will love skirts in a lighter, more flow-y fabric.
